A powerful champion

Impact through advocacy

Building One Community (B1C) opened in 2011 to provide welcoming support and services to immigrants in the Stamford area. Less than 10 years later, B1C is a thriving center offering literacy, legal, support and work-force development services to over 3,000 individuals and families annually. Anyone who walks through B1C’s doors sees a vibrant community of compassionate staff and volunteers who make magic happen.

In their recent strategic plan, B1C identified “helping to shape immigration policies” as a core strategy for future development. Social change has always been part of B1C’s identity through education, awareness, and organizing. Yet the organization wanted to do more to support comprehensive immigration reform through concerted advocacy.

Clear and strategic advocacy principles

The Strategy Group (TSG) was called in to help lead a meaningful conversation and create a clear call to action for the organization. We started with a survey to all board and staff to begin to define how B1C could take a more meaningful role in advocating positive change for immigrants. The survey also helped to identify the most important advocacy issues where B1C can work to organize, raise awareness, and educate the community. B1C then held a day-long board/staff retreat focused on defining advocacy strategies and outlining an advocacy agenda for the organization. TSG then worked with a small group of board and staff to draft “B1C Advocacy Principles” that were adopted by the Board of Directors. B1C is poised to be a strong and thoughtful voice around the important issues that impact local immigrant communities.

“As we embarked on the implementation of our new strategic plan and created a new Advocacy Task Force, we knew that the best way to craft our organization’s advocacy principles and priorities was to enlist Debra and her team to help us navigate this unchartered territory. We were thrilled with the process as well as the results and look forward to continuing to work with TSG on this and other critical issues for our organization and the community.”
